Factors Influencing on the Length of Time When the Subjective and Economic Poverty Occurs to the Elderly after Retirement

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyse factors influencing on the length of time when economic poverty occurs after retirement, risk probability of chronological economic poverty occurrence, and difference of the length of time and risk probability by group. Questionnaire is used to collect data and survey target is the elderly over 61 years old living in Busan Metropolitan city and Gyeongsang Namdo. The Life table method and Cox-Proportional hazards model of survival analysis are used to achieve research objectives. The findings are as follows; First, Some of the elderly experienced economic poverty during his/her 50s. Second, most of economic poverty of the elderly occurred within 1 year of his/her retirement. Third, groups of the elderly such as old woman, the elderly living alone, the elderly who has academic background below the middle-school and separation by death old person are particularly vulnerable to economic poverty even before 61 year-old, 58 year-old in average. Forth, factors Influencing on the Length of Time when the Subjective and economic poverty occurs to the elderly after retirement are job opportunity after 61-year-old, the burden of supporting his/her family members, national pension, his/her job before 61 year-old such as professionals, manager, government officials, and office clerk. Based on these results, this article suggests that it is needed to consider a preferential action for the elderly to whom economic poverty occurred early after retirement, to take an action based on the length of time when economic poverty occurs to the elderly, to connect a policy for the elderly with employment policy for middle-aged people, to provide a job opportunity to the elderly, to reform national pension, and to reinforce social welfare practice for prevention of poverty.
